Every fall, the same conversation starts making the rounds:
“Is this the best time of year to get tattooed?”
And actually… fall makes a pretty damn good case.
Fresh tattoos and blazing summer sun aren’t exactly best friends. UV exposure is something you need to take seriously while a tattoo is healing, and even after it’s healed, UV contributes to fading over time. Fall definitely gives you a little breathing room; Less time baking in direct sunlight, fewer afternoons at the pool and less temptation to jump into a lake three days after getting tattooed because your buddies rented a pontoon.
That alone makes fall a little more ideal.
Then there’s the humid heat… the sun..
Anyone who has healed a big tattoo in July knows the special kind of bullshit that comes with sweating under clothing while trying not to irritate fresh skin. Cooler fall temperatures mean less sweating, which can make keeping your tattoo a little more clean, comfortable. and a hell of a lot happier.
But fall isn’t perfect.
As temperatures drop and the furnace comes on, the air gets a lot drier. Your skin typically gets drier with it. Healing tattoos already have enough itching and flaking going on without you turning into a human scratch-off ticket.
Moisturize. Ask your artist what they prefer. Don’t drown the thing in lotion, but don’t let it turn into the Sahara either.
And then we have hoodies.
We love hoodie season, but fresh tattoos don’t necessarily love rough fabric, tight sleeves and constant friction. If your new piece is going to live underneath layers, keep things loose, clean and breathable while it heals. Your favorite skin-tight thermal can wait.
So... is fall officially the best season to get tattooed?
Maybe…
Cooler temperatures, less direct sun, fewer swimming days and generally easier aftercare make a solid argument for it.
But here’s the Truth & Triumph answer:
The best time to get a tattoo is whenever you’re feeling it!
January. July. October. Tuesday afternoon because you had a shitty week and decided a new tattoo sounded better than therapy..
Good tattoos happen year-round.
Pick a tattoo you love. Find an artist you trust. Listen to their aftercare instructions. Take care of your skin.
We’ll handle the rest.
