Reasons We Don't Use Numbing Cream Before Tattoos
Let's be real. Getting a tattoo isn't exactly a trip to the spa.
A tattoo is an experience. It's exciting, nerve-racking, sometimes uncomfortable, and almost always worth it. Because of that, one of the most common questions tattoo artists hear today is:
"Can I use numbing cream?"
The answer depends on who you ask.
Some artists are perfectly comfortable working with numbing products. Others encourage them for certain clients, or specific situations. At Truth & Triumph Tattoo, however, we've made our decision.
We choose not to use numbing cream during tattoo appointments.
Not because we're trying to make the experience harder.
Not because we think people should "be more tough".
And not because we enjoy watching anyone squirm in the chair.
Our decision comes down to experience, tattoo quality, and respecting the craft.
Numbing Cream Has Become More Popular
There's no denying it. Numbing creams have definitely exploded in popularity over the last several years.
Social media has helped normalize them, influencers recommend them, and countless companies market them as a way to make tattoos "pain free."
For someone getting their first tattoo, that can sound pretty appealing. We get it.
But experienced tattoo artists often have a different perspective.
The Skin Is the Artist's Canvas
One thing that so many people don't realize is that tattooing isn't just about putting ink into skin. Your skin IS the canvas.
Anything that changes the texture, consistency, or condition of that canvas can change the tattooing process. Right?
In our experience, numbing creams can alter the way the skin feels. Some products may leave skin feeling softer, tougher, swollen, or otherwise different than untreated skin. That can make it more difficult for an artist to work consistently and can affect how comfortably the tattoo progresses.
Every artist develops techniques over years, sometimes decades, of tattooing. When something changes the surface they're working on, it changes the experience for everyone involved.
Healing Matters Just As Much As Tattooing
The tattoo doesn't end when you leave the shop.
Healing is where your investment really begins.
Many people use numbing products without experiencing problems. However, we've personally seen situations where things didn't go as planned. We've seen difficult healing, unusually irritated skin, and in some cases, reactions caused by excessive application or repeatedly applying numbing products during long sessions.
Some clients assume, "If a little works, more must be better."…
Unfortunately, that's not the case.
Every person's skin reacts differently, and because products vary widely in ingredients and strength, there simply isn't a one-size-fits-all experience.
When it comes to creating tattoos that heal beautifully, we'd rather eliminate unnecessary variables whenever possible.
A Tattoo Is More Than the Ink
Here's where tattoo culture enters the conversation.
For so many generations, tattoos have carried a certain mystique.
Every tattoo tells a story of some kind.
Sometimes that story is about the artwork itself.
Sometimes it's about what that tattoo represents.
And sometimes it's about sitting through six hours while your friend reminds you, "YOU picked this spot."
That shared experience has always been part of tattoo culture. The discomfort isn't the point. Nobody gets tattooed because they're chasing pain.
But overcoming that temporary discomfort becomes part of the memory. It's part of what many collectors talk about years later. Trust us. We’ve seen enough to be confident about this.
Ask almost any heavily tattooed person about their favorite piece, and chances are they'll tell you more than what it looks like. They'll tell you about the road trip, the convention, the artist, the playlist, the laughs, the terrible chair they sat in, and yes...probably how much that rib tattoo hurt.
Those stories become part of the tattoo.
There Are No Shortcuts to Great Tattoos
We live in a world that loooooovvvves shortcuts.
Faster.
Easier.
Efficient.
Tattooing has never really been about any of those things. Think about it.
Great tattoos take planning.
Great artists spend years learning their craft.
Great healing takes patience.
At Truth & Triumph Tattoo, we believe some things are totally worth earning. Not because anyone needs to "prove themselves," but because tattoos are permanent works of art that deserve respect from both the artist and the client.
The process is part of that respect.
Our Shop. Our Philosophy.
Will you find tattoo artists who happily work with numbing cream?
Absolutely.
Will you find clients who have had positive experiences using it?
Of course.
The tattoo industry has always been filled with different opinions, techniques, and philosophies. That's one of the things that makes it such an interesting community.
For us, though, we've chosen to stick with the approach that's served us and our clients well for years.
Our priority has always been creating tattoos that heal well, look incredible, and give every client the best experience possible from start to finish.
If that means feeling a little discomfort along the way, we believe it's a small part of a much bigger journey.
Because years from now, you probably won't remember every minute you spent in the chair.
You'll remember the artwork.
You'll remember the laughs.
You'll remember the day.
And somewhere down the road, when someone asks, "Did that hurt?"
You can smile, look down at your tattoo, and honestly say...
"Yep. And it was worth every second."
